Ireland: Private retreat “Horse Island” sold

  • Engel & Völkers brokers the approx. 64-hectare private island in partnership with real estate company Colliers International
  • Increased demand in the luxury segment for secluded retreats

Hamburg, 16 July 2020

Despite coronavirus restrictions, Ron Krueger, Managing Director of Engel & Völkers Kinsale/Cork, has successfully brokered the exclusive private island known as “Horse Island, together with Callum Bain, Senior Surveyor at Colliers International. The asking price for the property was 5.5 million euros. The estate generated a high level of international interest, particularly from all over Europe, the USA and Asia. This led to a situation where two prospective buyers were seeking to acquire “Horse Island” at the same time. The island, which spans some 64 hectares, lies in Roaring Water Bay off the coast of West Cork in southwest Ireland, and can be reached by helicopter or boat. “We succeeded in finding a buyer for the island once before, back in 2007. So we are all the more pleased to be involved again, on behalf of the former buyer, with the brokerage of this unique island,” says Ron Krueger.

“Horse Island” offers absolute privacy in unique natural surroundings

There are seven properties in total on the private island. In addition to the six-bedroom main house, there are four additional residences and two cottages. Each property affords sea views and waterfront access to the bay. Other highlights of the island include a private mooring for ferries, a number of boats, various water sports facilities, a gym, and a tennis court. “Horse Island” offers complete privacy and also has its own electricity and water supply.

Private islands increasingly in demand as exclusive hideaways

“Prestigious retreats in remote and secluded locations give buyers the opportunity to relax and enjoy recreational pursuits far removed from the routine of daily work,” says Ron Krueger. Owning a waterfront property or your own private island is considered the ultimate luxury. Engel & Völkers is registering increased buyer interest in the premium segment for both of these types of property, as a direct consequence of the coronavirus crisis. “These special kinds of estate offer owners a place of refuge next to the water where they can feel close to nature whilst also enjoying upscale comforts, the utmost privacy and absolute flexibility,” Ron Krueger adds.
